Sterling Hyden put in over 21 years at the Kmart Distribution Center and
was a manager in the receiving department. Prior to that, he was manager
at Sirloin Stockade.
"There were five of us left on the last day at the distribution center,"
Hyden said. "When we left that day, it was the first time I ever
remember the front doors having to be locked."
After Kmart's closing, Hyden found himself in the same boat as many
others in our area. Searching for employment and finding affordable
health insurance were two priorities that had to be dealt with.
"I had other job offers but the timing of my college courses and the
fact that I didn't want to move from the area played a big part in
taking the opportunity to open an insurance office," Hyden said.
Hyden decided to embark on a new career, selling insurance products for
Farmers Insurance Group. He offers UNICARE health insurance, which is
the same insurance the employees had with Kmart.
"Life insurance in general is not the same as it used to be," Hyden
said. "It is now available as mortgage protection and income
replacement. These protections allow families to remain in their own
homes."
He also offers homeowners insurance, and has companies that will write
policies for the many older homes we have in the Corsicana area.
He also offers commercial insurance for the business owners needs.
"Our restaurant and office building policies are a very good product for
business owners," Hyden said. "We also have companies that will bond
most contractors, as well as individuals."
He sells insurance to cover motorcycles, boats, travel trailers, and
also ATV's and personal watercraft.
"We have companies that cover most mobile homes, too," Hyden said.
And for residents of the county who rent their homes, Hyden can sell
renters insurance. The owner carries insurance on the building, and
renters can have their property covered and carry liability, for as low
as $25 per month.
